8 photographs submitted for my first midterm. Yes, I have gone back to school to pursue a Masters degree in Fine Art (MFA) with an emphasis on photography at the Academy of Art University. I still can't believe it which is why I needed to post it here...to make it REAL REAL. I want to teach photography in a college or university setting and in order to do so I need this degree. Some might argue that fact, but I'm an academian at heart. :) Also, it was the right time in my life to leave the grade school classroom to pursue this passion. And believe me, I consulted so many near and dear to me about it...tears involved. Leaving the classroom was like breaking up. It was an 8 year relationship! I'm still a teacher at heart, but THIS is what I would like to teach.

The time I've been investing in these three online courses has made me busier than I could have imagined, yet it's focusing my practice and my art. I'm loving the creative part (but not so much the writing and the Photoshop). The last photograph is digital only because of the time I spent trying to think of things that were black. Really. It's not THAT easy to make it interesting. Records and a Holga were my way of paying homage to all things hispter...ahahh no, all things analog.

So if I've been absent lately in terms of the business, this is why. Things are stirring afoot in the business. I took the site down for now as changes are being made, but I'm still open for business.

Let me preface this post by saying that it pales in comparison to Paris. I'm not sure if I was warming up, if the New Year holiday closures prevented me from shooting, or if I felt limited with the equipment I had. But I only had a roll and change shot of London. However, I can say that I truly enjoyed my time there. And I know why.

As much as I was okay with being by myself during this trip, it helped that I was able to see a familiar face or two in London. And, no I didn't take pictures of the time I spent with my friends, but I can say that it was the best part of the trip. It was a great way to spend the first day of the year.

I will go back and shoot London properly one day. But for now, this will do.

Paris - En Couleur, Part Deux

These might need some explanation. The top picture was taken after the proposal on our last guided day of the tour. Then it was off to Versailles, one of the highlights of my trip. The church there is the Basilique Sacré-Coeur (Basilica of the Sacred Heart) located in the place where Amélie was filmed. I only wish it were a clear day when we visited there instead of a cold, cloudy night. The view would have been spectacular. The Arc de Triomphe follows, built to honor soldiers coming home from battle. The traffic circle that surrounds it is a wonder in itself...a scary wonder.

The rest were from my adventures in the city. Accordion man in the metro was soo Paris to me that I had to take a picture as were the colorful or old doors I saw. I do love taking pictures of walls. And if you've seen the movie Exit Through the Gift Shop, you'll notice the Space Invader street art I found on the walls. I also saw some Shepard Fairey art, but it was while we were driving in the bus. Then I stumbled upon the Pont des Arts bridge aka "Pont de L'Amour" and all its locks of love.

Next, my only self portrait, taken behind the Notre Dame. I'll go back one day when there's a lot of foliage.

The rest of the pictures were people from my tour group who I went with to see the catacombs. It was waaaay too dark in there to take any pictures, but it was quite amazing.

And finally birds flying in the plaza of the Notre Dame.

There were some things I just could not photograph (since it was banned) such as the D'Orsay museum where I got to see all my favorite French Impressionist art and Ladurée, famous for their macarons.

Hope you enjoyed a peek at Paris through my eyes. I wasn't in London long enough to take as many pictures, but they're coming soon. :)

Last month I finished my first (and most likely my only) full marathon in San Francisco. To calm my pre-race jitters, I grabbed my camera and shot stuff around the city. The first shot was the first on the roll, thus the missing piece. But I loved the colors so much I included it anyway.

Took the metro one summer day and went to Grand Central Market, Tom's Bench and Angels Flight, the shortest and seemingly steepest rail ride for a quarter. Then we headed to Hollywood for some Umami (not pictured). I'm a sucker for beat up, dilapidated walls. THAT's why I love urban areas.

About the post...I only had my wide lens, which I rarely use now. I've cropped some of the pictures and realized that I cropped them to a 50mm perspective. Also, the film stock was just generic film from Walmart. Eh. Either way, I think that all those things add to the feel of a downtown shoot out. I was craving my 50 though...if not my medium format. (END photography geek-out...)

All decorations were made by Rachel, Ann, Kim, Kit and Janet herself. It was a party that was Martha Stewart-worthy with all the little details. I only wish I could have taken more pictures but I was enjoying myself too much, especially with making my own paper doll! Can you tell which one is me? There were more games that were supposed to be played, but all of us latched onto the crafting and spent the majority of the shower eating and creating. So fun!

The last picture is of our honored teammate, Alyssa. She's battling Leukemia and as a result of her treatments she has become blind. She was at this training run and that's when I got to meet her. A last minute photo shoot for my niece, Katrina who needed photos for potential modeling. :)

I had fun hanging out with these two. We shot a roll in less than 20 minutes then dropped off the film at Walgreens to get them done fast. So, if the scans look a little shoddy, you know why. But, I must say that I'm surprised that Walgreens did an okay job.

I can't believe they're both in college. I've watched them grow up! I love 'em.

Lake Street - Echo Park

This is my day job and today was the first day of my summer break. This year was different for me and I'm not sure if it's an indication that my teaching career is coming to an end or if it was the nuances of my class this year. Instead of a feeling of accomplishment and joy, I felt mostly relief and some sadness. In any case, I'm glad I'm on break and that I can use the summer to reflect and rejuvenate.

I am VERY lucky to work at this school. I remember the day when Sally (see Loose Family post) and I made the decision to go to Lake Street and leave our current placement. Sally, though she wanted to stay, told me that she would do whatever I was gonna do. It was so stressful that there were tears.

We were scared that we had to start all over again when we had just gotten used to being teachers. We had to teach kindergarten on a year round schedule and that meant no summer break. We moved into a dirty bungalow and had to get to know new staff members. We dealt with bees flying into our classroom the first two months of school. Neither of us had taught kindergarten and it was more than draining. Regardless of all those seemingly big challenges, I can confidently say that it was the best decision I made for my career in education; mainly because I got to work with the awesome person in the last picture.

I've had the privilege and honor of working with Julie for the last 5 (!) years. She has been an exceptional administrator who has showed me the meaning of professionalism, dedication and perseverance in the workplace. The first few years at Lake were no smooth ride but Julie persevered with professionalism to create a caring, accepting and responsive school environment for both students and staff alike.

I can't imagine what it's gonna be like without her next year. She's my mentor, confidante and friend. Her new staff are the luckiest people in LAUSD and there is no doubt that her new school will succeed. I wish her the best.

Robyn is one of my good friends who is always down to try new things. In the last year she's convinced me to learn trapeze and run a marathon. This year for her birthday we went on a murder mystery scavenger hunt in Hollywood. It was a bit of a wild goose chase, but we had fun anyway.

Little did we know that her man, Reggie, had more planned as later that night he proposed to her in a helicopter ride!!!! So happy that my two friends are happy together.

This is my day job. I wish I could post more of the pictures, but alas, kids are protected and I don't wanna be sued. For a second and third pass at the Holga, I'd say it's a fun camera to work with. The red light leaks are interesting, but only really showed up when I took out the mask from the camera. I'm loving the square format too. The last two dudes there are teacher's aides. They've shared my joy and pain in the classroom and I owe them for helping me stay sane and helping my kids learn.

But if I want the effects, I'm gonna have to go to my $$$ lab and maybe that will have to wait. But it IS their Holga that I borrowed, so maybe a couple rolls....

I don't condone texting while driving, even if I still do it (eek) and I really don't condone taking pictures while driving, even if I still do it (eeeeeek!). Yes, these were all taken, foolishly, while driving this weekend. I must say that I got some keepers by just aiming. These are posted in the order they were taken and if I didn't like the first shot so much, I probably would have stopped.

I must say that I love that last shot of my city's skyline. I've been dying for a shot of it and really, there are no better places than the freeways to see it. Being a So-Californian, I spend a LOT of time in my car, and there are so many things that I've wanted to take pictures of on each respective freeway. I'm glad I got to check off two of those things without seriously harming anyone or anything.

My sister was out with her girlfriends so we hung out with my brother-in-law. We went to J-town for some Izakaya, Bruce Lee and karaoke. Walking the streets of downtown towards karaoke, we run into two of my BIL's former co-workers! What are the chances? So they joined us for two hours of singing the best of Snoop and Dr Dre, Queen, Taylor Swift and even Lady Gaga. I can't explain the last picture. All I said was pose...and that's what happened. They look like little boys. :D

I met AJ at UCLA. I know who Kubrick is because of him. He's also the one person who's believed in me and my camera from the beginning. He actually hired me for my first gig. And it was so long ago that I was shooting film. Kinda cool how things come full circle; that when I finally get to work with him again, I'm shooting film again.
